Last night at The Masquerade in Atlanta, DevilDriver brought a massive tour that left the crowd bruised and battered by the end of the night. I got to sit down with Dez from DevilDriver before the show for a short interview, and then I met up with Jay from Thy Will Be Done and shot his interview. This interview may be the funniest thing I've ever been a part of in my entire life. He kept me laughing the whole time, and I don't know how long it was, but it was fun as hell. Then I went inside to grab my first PBR and get ready for the show.
I can't even count how many times I've seen Goatwhore live. It may be in the double digits, but I'll see this band every time they come through Atlanta. Ben is such a powerful presence on stage and last night, they were there to destroy the place. From the first note, the crowd was insane and banging their heads to the black and roll monsters on stage. A little fight broke out during their set and Ben quickly said "We are a metal family. We must stick together to take out the horrible music of the world, ya know, the GaGa's and such. Don't fight each other, we are one." Not only was it a great statement because I hate Lady GaGa with a passion, but this is what I love about metal. It's our music, others may not like it, and that's fine, but we gotta stick together for metal's sake. After that speech, Goatwhore then broke into "Apocalyptic Havoc" and had the crowd yelling "Who needs a God when you've got Satan!" That song is so intense live, it will never get old to me. Goatwhore is just such a sick live band, there's nothing else to say. On to Suffocation...
One word comes to mind every time Suffocation comes to town- Perfection. This band has been playing death metal for numerous years, yet they just seem to get better and better. And Suffocation's live show is as brutal as any band out there can put on. Frank owns the stage right from the first note. His arm is shaking, the tongue is out, it's time for him to take over. Their set consisted of songs from the past to now, and the crowd was loving every moment. Between the songs, Frank kept us entertained by talking about buying all the firearms we could, throwing people in woodchippers, and more. He's such a great death metal vocalist and he definitely knows how to control an audience better than most. They played a long set that just pummeled the crowd and set it up perfectly for the headliners, DevilDriver.
When it comes to DevilDriver, you know exactly what your going to get at their live show. It will be insane, it will be loud, and it will be powerful to everyone in the crowd. They came out to "End Of The Line" and the pit was the craziest it had been all night. The pit wasn't stopping throughout their whole set, and Dez made sure of that. Dez kept pushing the crowd to go crazier and crazier, and it worked. Their setlist had all their hits, and a few surprises thrown in there, but the crowd didn't stop losing their minds until the very end of the show. Dez is a road warrior, yet he still loves his music and is just awesome live. You got to respect the DevilDriver guys, because they play their style of music, don't care what other say, and they throw down hard live. Plus they hate hardcore dancers, which is awesome. Views: 2
